Artifact 8: RE 5100: Mid-Term and Final
Mid Term    Final

Context: This artifact was completed as partial fulfillment for RE 5100, Teaching Beginning Readers and Writers, under the direction of Dr. Darrell Morris. In this course, I was introduced to the history of reading education, as well as to the theory of invented spelling, and to the method of using word sorts as a way to teach phonics. These exams show my understanding of the trends in reading education today and in the past, as well as my understanding of the main competencies a student needs to gain in kindergarten in order to move towards literacy. They also show my understanding of the importance of first grade reading groups, and the benefits of using writing in a lower elementary setting to reinforce literacy learning.

Alignment:

A.   Instructional Expertise

The candidate demonstrates instructional expertise by applying the theoretical, philosophical, and research bases for educational practice in P-12 settings to improve student learning.

Rationale: My responses on these exams demonstrate my breadth of knowledge of research and theories on the teaching of reading and writing to young learners. They also show that I am able to design appropriate instruction based on my assessment of student needs, especially in the areas of spelling and phonics instruction, and also in appropriate grouping for reading instruction. Thus, this artifact shows that I " incorporate findings from educational literature into school and classroom strategies to improve student learning."

B. Knowledge of Learners

The candidate incorporates knowledge of the nature of the learner, learning processes, variations in learning abilities and learning styles, and strategies for evaluating learning into the planning, delivery, and evaluation of instruction.

Rationale: I understand the developmental stages of learning to read and write. Therefore, I am able to apply this knowledge to learners at various stages along the reading continuum to appropriately instruct them on their level.

D. Content Knowledge

The candidate demonstrates advanced depth and breadth of knowledge and skills in the academic discipline and in education.

Rationale: This artifact demonstrates the depth and breadth of my knowledge in the field of reading instruction.
