Artifact 12: ELL Research Summary
Context: This summary was completed as partial requirement for RE 5730, Reading and Writing Instruction for Intermediate and Advanced Learners, taught by Dr. Gary Moorman. Because I was unable to get permission for a professional development day to attend the Price Reading Symposium hosted at ASU in the fall of 2007, I had to read an article about ELL instruction and summarize it. I found this assignment especially relevant to my teaching context because I work as an ELL teacher. I chose to summarize this article by Jill Fitzgerald because she was a presenter at the symposium and because it itself was a compilation and review of significant research studies done in the field of ELL. Also, my work towards ELL certification has involved a great deal of work with this specialized population of learners and has aided in my overall understanding of the teaching of reading and its many issues. A. Instructional Expertise The candidate demonstrates instructional expertise by applying the theoretical, philosophical, and research bases for educational practice in P-12 settings to improve student learning.
B. Knowledge of Learners
Rationale: This artifact demonstrates how I furthered my knowledge of the learners specific to my classroom, namely ELL students.
C. Research The candidate uses research to examine and improve instructional effectiveness and student achievement.
Rationale: This artifact demonstrates my willingness to research relevant fields in an effort to improve my instructional effectiveness: in this case, my literacy instruction for English Language Learners.
