The war was between the federal government of the United States and 11 Southern states that asserted their right to secede from the Union over the issue of ownership of Slaves

During the American Civil War many women became the heads of households, and worked outside the home, fulfilling roles left by their husbands, sons, fathers, or brothers. Many more women joined aid societies that raised money, recruited soldiers, and provisioned them with food and clothing.  The need to support those away from home was that great.
